Old Ghan Railway Tour from Adelaide & Port Augusta to Alice Springs or reverse with Pitchi Ritchi railway at Quorn then 4WD via the Old Ghan Railway & Overland Telegraph Line OTL, Beltana, Farina, Marree, via Lake Eyre Curdimurka, Coward Springs, Strangeways, Algebuckina, William Creek, Oodnadatta, Finke, to Alice Springs. Once back at Maryvale there is a 14km trip back to the Old Ghan Heritage Trail and the remains of Rodinga. From here you will pass through or near a number of old sidings as you head to Alice Springs, another 101km north. The track is sandy, occasionally corrugated, but in good condition. Old Ghan Sites.
From Rodinga the route stays close to the original route of the Ghan Railway although the latest alignment of the road is a little to the west in places. Now you’ll need to turn east off the main track north to go and see the Ewaninga Rock Carvings which used to be right beside the track north. On your return to MARYVALE check with the general store as to the Condition of the most direct track that will lead you back onto the OLD GHAN LINE. Hema shows 3 routes when in fact there is only one. You are 125 KM’s north of FINKE, head south you cant miss it even if you wanted to.The Track is linked closely to the old Ghan railway and much of the points of interest are linked to the railway. The Pink Roadhouse in Oodnadatta publish an excellent pamphlet detailing where most of the points of interest are, and we thoroughly enjoyed our drive south with our handy brochure.
has anybody travelled the Old Ghan Track from Maree to William Creek and if so could you give me information on the road conditions as we planning to travel from Maree to Alice Spring incorporating the Oodnadatta track to Marla. The Oodnadatta Track, however, is definitely worth doing – as is Coober Pedy. If you went Marla-William Creek-Coober Pedy, you’re still going to get a taste of the Oodnadatta Track and see some of the sights, however you’ll miss the mound springs, Strangways, Coward Springs and the Alberrie Sculptures. how long was the Old Ghan Line Pt Augusta to Alice Springs and how much track is left and could it be rebuilt. putting ideas into your heads well at least mine "18A" I know the track extends about 6km north of quorn till it come to bridge that gone. I reckon that bridge was washed out, either that or AN found some else to pull up.
The Oodnadatta Track is an unsealed 617 km 383 mi outback road in the Australian state of South Australia passing from Marree in the south-east to Marla in the north-west via Oodnadatta. Along the way, the track passes the southern lake of the Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre National Park, the settlements of William Creek and Oodnadatta, and mound. After the Old Ghan ceased running, it was replaced by the "Legendary Ghan" in 1980, and now travels to Alice Springs on a standard gauge railway line from Adelaide via Tarcoola, west of the old track. It can be seen from the Old Ghan Heritage Railway complex as it speeds into Alice Springs. The final link to Darwin was completed in 2001. Our plan was to follow the Old Ghan Railway Heritage Trail from Alice Springs to Oodnadatta, but it didn’t really turn out that way.
